All Virtual Reality Services (VR Services) users must carefully read and understand all procedures and warnings, and accept the VR Services Agreement before using VR Services.

Procedures
  • Users under the age of 18 require a parent or legal guardian to accept the VR Services Agreement
  • Children under the age of 12 and/or under 48 inches tall may not use VR Services
  • Food and drink are not permitted near VR Services components
  • Do not drop or cause an impact to VR Services components
  • Do not expose VR Services components to water, fluids or direct sunlight
  • You are solely responsible for the care of your personal items while using VR Services
  • Calibration of VR Services components may take up a portion your scheduled time allotment
  • Violation of these procedures will result in the immediate termination of your session
  • See a doctor before using VR Services if you:
    • Are pregnant
    • Are elderly
    • Have a binocular vision abnormality
    • Have a psychiatric disorder
    • Have a heart condition
    • Have a serious medical condition
    • Have seizures or an epileptic condition

Never use VR Services when:

  • Tired, stressed or anxious
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Experiencing digestive problems
  • Suffering from cold, flu, headaches, migraines, or earaches
  • Suffering from a contagious condition, infection or disease
  • Handling any objects other than the controllers
  • Any VR Services component is broken or damaged

Always

  • Follow the FFPLTC Code of Conduct and use VR Services in a safe manner
  • Remove any tripping hazards from your play area
  • Ensure the cables are not choking or tripping hazards, or twisted around nearby objects
  • Ensure the controllers’ battery tray covers lock in place
  • Ensure the headset is secured on your head, and that you see a single, clear image
  • Ensure the boundary system is enabled, and your play area is properly defined
  • Move slowly enough to react to any boundary system alerts
  • Adjust the volume down to only the minimum volume setting necessary to hear music
  • Adjust the inter-pupillary distance before using VR Services
  • Secure the controllers to your wrists with wrist straps
  • Take at least a 10 minute break every 30 minutes, even if you think you don’t need it

Wearing Glasses

  • Users who require glasses must take care to not have their glasses touch the lenses of any head mounted display. Glasses may create pressure and cause pain or significant discomfort for the user.
  • If a user cannot achieve a comfortable, safe fit while wearing glasses, we recommend using one of our circulating Oculus Rift Go's with a glasses adapter installed.
Warnings

See a doctor before using VR Services if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Are elderly
  • Have a binocular vision abnormality
  • Have a psychiatric disorder
  • Have a heart condition
  • Have a serious medical condition
  • Have seizures or an epileptic condition

Interference with medical devices

  • VR Services components could interfere with cardiac pacemakers, hearing aids and defibrillators
  • Do not use VR Services if you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device
  • Maintain a safe distance between VR Services components and your medical devices
  • Stop using VR Services if you observe interference with your medical device

Seizures

  • Some people have severe dizziness, seizures, twitching or blackouts triggered by light flashes or patterns
  • This may occur while you are using VR Services, even if you have never had a seizure or blackout before, or have no history of seizures or epilepsy
  • Discontinue use if you experience any of these symptoms and see a doctor

Children 12+

  • Parents or legal guardians must:
    • Make sure children age 12 and older use VR Services in accordance with these warnings
    • Monitor children who use or have used VR Services for any of the symptoms described
    • Limit the time children spend using VR Services and ensure they take breaks during use
    • Monitor children closely during and after use of VR Services for any decrease in: hand-eye coordination, balance or multi-tasking ability

Choking

  • Keep VR Services components, which contain small parts, away from children age 3 and under
  • If a battery is swallowed, it can lead to death

Symptoms

Immediately discontinue using VR Services if any of the following symptoms are experienced:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness
  • Eye strain
  • Eye or muscle twitching
  • Involuntary movements
  • Altered, blurred, or double vision
  • Dizziness
  • Disorientation
  • Impaired balance
  • Impaired hand-eye coordination
  • Panic or anxiety attack
  • Excessive sweating
  • Increased salivation
  • Nausea
  • Light-headedness
  • Pain in the head or eyes
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Motion sickness

Post-use symptoms

  • Symptoms can persist and become more apparent hours after using VR Services
  • Post-use symptoms can include excessive drowsiness and decreased ability to multi-task
  • Post-use symptoms increase the risk of injury while engaging in real world activities
  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in physically demanding activities that require unimpaired balance and hand-eye until you have fully recovered
  • Do not use VR Services until all symptoms have completely subsided for several hours

Collision

  • VR Services produce an immersive experience that blocks view of your surroundings
  • Don’t sit or stand on virtual objects or use them for support in the real world
  • Serious injuries can occur from tripping, striking walls, furniture or other objects
  • You may be unaware if people enter your play area while using VR Services

Volume

  • Protect your hearing and ears when using VR Services
  • Excessive exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing damage

Skin irritation

  • Stop using VR Services if you notice swelling, itchiness, skin irritation or other reactions

Repetitive stress injury

  • Stop using VR Services and rest for several hours if:
    • Any part of your body becomes tired or sore
    • You feel symptoms such as tingling, numbness, burning or stiffness

Content

  • Frightening, violent or stressful content can cause your body to react as if it were real
  • Use suitable content if you experience discomfort or physical symptoms in these situations
  • You may be more prone to symptoms based upon the content being used

Contact a doctor if any symptoms present or persist as a result of using VR Services

Agreement

I agree to abide by the policies and procedures surrounding the use of Virtual Reality (VR) equipment and services, hereafter collectively referred to as “VR Services, provided by the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre (FFPLTC). I agree to the terms of this agreement on behalf of any children I can legally represent, if indicated below.

My use of VR Services entails known and unanticipated risks that could result in physical or emotional injury, paralysis, death, or damage to myself, to property, or to third parties. I understand that such risks cannot be eliminated without jeopardizing the essential qualities of the activity. The risks include, among other things: seizures, loss of awareness, eye strain, eye or muscle twitching, involuntary movements, altered, blurred, or double vision or other visual abnormalities, dizziness, disorientation, impaired balance, impaired hand-eye coordination, excessive sweating, increased salivation, nausea, light-headedness, discomfort or pain in the head or eyes, drowsiness, decreased ability to multi-task, fatigue, or any symptoms similar to motion sickness, all of which can persist and become more apparent hours after use and which may lead to an increased risk of injury when engaging in normal activities in the real world.

FFPLTC staff seek to create a safe environment but may be unaware of a participant's health or abilities. FFPLTC staff may give incomplete warnings or instructions. VR Services may malfunction. I expressly agree to accept and assume all of the risks existing in this activity. I am responsible for restricting access to VR Services provided to me by the FFPLTC to my own personal use. My participation in this activity is purely voluntary and I elect to participate in spite of the risks.

I release and hold harmless the FFPLTC, their board, staff, volunteers, and committees from and against any and all liability, loss, damages, claims, or actions (including costs and lawyer’s fees) for damage to myself or my property, arising from my use of VR Services.

I agree to indemnify the above parties for any liability, loss, damages, claims or actions (including costs and lawyer’s fees) brought by a third party arising from my use of VR Services.

If any portion of this agreement is found to be void or unenforceable, the remaining portions shall remain in full force and effect.
